By 2027, 6.6% of TV households in Africa are expected to pay for a VOD subscription at least once, up from 3.9% at the end of 2021.
Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital Television Research, said: “Considering Africa’s low broadband penetration and low per capita disposable income, some streaming platforms are only launching regionally in Africa, all of which are Reduced the growth rate of SVoD subscriptions in Africa. For example, Disney+ is only available in South Africa and Nigeria; US streaming platform Paramount+ is only available in South Africa; North American streaming HBO Max is also not available as a standalone platform in Africa.”
Streaming platform Netflix will remain the leader in the SVoD market in Africa, with 6.41 million subscribers expected by 2027, accounting for 48% of the total SVoD subscribers in the region. Taking into account the regional launch of Disney+ in Africa, it is expected that by 2027, the number of SVoD subscribers of Disney+ in Africa will be only 1 million.
Streaming platform Prime Video will launch in Nigeria and South Africa in 2023. Digital TV Research predicts that by 2027, Prime Video is expected to reach 2.63 million SVoD subscribers in the African region.
